About

Thirty years in. Still sweating the details.

I'm Matthew. I've spent more than 30 years building websites, brands and video, and Clever Fox Creative is where all of it comes together.

How it started

I’VE BEEN DOING THIS A LONG TIME.

  1. Age 12First started programming.
  2. By 16Already winning recognition from Adobe.
  3. CollegeEarned an IT degree, taught design, video and web at the college level.
  4. CareerLed creative and marketing teams. Built brands, websites, campaigns, video and digital strategy across a wide range of industries.
  5. NowClever Fox Creative.

I started building websites when I was 12.

By 16, some of that early work had already earned recognition including from Adobe. From there, I earned an IT degree, taught IT and creative courses at the college level, and built a career that has stayed firmly planted between creative and technical work.

Since then, I’ve led creative and marketing teams, managed brands, built websites, produced video, handled photography, SEO, digital strategy and campaigns across a wide range of industries.

I’ve worked on both the agency side and the client side, which taught me something important: looking good is only part of the job. The work has to actually work for the business paying for it.

Small on purpose.

Clever Fox Creative is intentionally small, nimble and personal. You work with me, start to finish. No hand-offs, no layers, no wondering who is actually doing the work.

The home team

The part that matters most.

My wife and I are raising a blended family of seven kids, the youngest just 3. Life outside of work is loud, busy, a little chaotic, and exactly how we like it.

They're a big part of why I built Clever Fox the way I did: to make work I'm proud of without losing sight of the people I'm doing it for.

All accounted for. Bedtime: still negotiating.

Where I've been

Big brands. Small towns. Same standards.

My work has covered healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, consumer products, local government, education and small business.

Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to do creative and marketing work for brands including the Kansas City Chiefs, LEGO Education, Wacker Neuson, USG, Milwaukee, CAT and Acura, and I was named Midwest Videographer of the Year in 2017 and 2018.

Different industries, different audiences, different challenges, but the standard stays the same whether the work is for a national brand or the business down the street.

The part a lot of people miss

Looking good is only part of the job.

How I work

  1. Hands on.

I am in the work, not managing it from across the room. The person you talk to is the person building it.

  2. Details first.

Usability, speed, the small things people feel but never mention. That is where good work separates itself from fine work.

  3. Made to fit.

Original work built around your business, your customers and how you actually operate. Not a template with your logo on it.

Also: Chiefs fan. Obviously.

Let's build something people remember.
